The Argonauts were a band of heroes in Greek mythology who, in the years before the Trojan War, accompanied Jason to Colchis (modern day Georgia) in his quest to find the Golden Fleece


Batumi is located on the site of the ancient Greek colony in Colchis called Bathus or Bathys - derived from the Greek phrase bathus limen or bathys limin meaning "deep harbour".

In the Georgian language, the root for "Greek" is "-berdz-" (from the word for "wisdom"), so "Greece" is "Saberdzneti"

The Caucasus is one of the most linguistically and culturally diverse regions on Earth. The nation states that comprise the Caucasus today are the post-Soviet states Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan. The Russian divisions include Krasnodar Krai, Stavropol Krai, and the autonomous republics of Adygea, Karachay-Cherkessia, Kabardino-Balkaria, North Ossetia, Ingushetia, Chechnya, and Dagestan.

In modern times, the Caucasus became a region of war among the Ottoman Empire, Iran and Russia, and was eventually conquered by the latter

Strategically located on the crossroads between Asia and Europe, the Georgian people have been influenced by many civilizations throughout history.


Georgians are the only Caucasian language-speaking people who have their own independent state - Georgia




Tbilisi is a multicultural city. Around 80% of the population is ethnically Georgian, with significant populations of other ethnic groups which include Armenians, and Azeris. Along with the above mentioned groups, Tbilisi is also home to various other tiny ethnic groups including Ossetians, Abkhazians, Ukrainians, Greeks, Jews, Russians, Estonians, Germans, Kurds, Assyrians,



In Greek mythology the Caucasus, or Kaukasos, was one of the pillars supporting the world. After presenting man with the gift of fire, Prometheus was chained there by Zeus, to have his liver eaten daily by an eagle.

Georgia's medieval culture was greatly influenced by Eastern Orthodox Christianity which promoted and often sponsored the creation of many works of religious devotion. These included churches and monasteries, works of art such as icons, and hagiographies of Georgian saints.
